National Children's Gardening Week

  • May 2025

National Children’s Gardening Week is a brilliant UK-wide initiative that encourages kids to discover the joy of gardening.

Timed perfectly with the late May half-term, the week takes advantage of the warmer weather, meaning little gardeners can see fast results from the seeds they sow and the plants they care for.

At One Garden Brighton, we’re getting involved with a range of fun, hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity and a love for nature. Whether your children are trying gardening for the first time or already love getting stuck in with soil and seeds, this is a great chance to help them grow their skills and a few seeds too.

Throughout the week, we’ll be offering planting sessions, crafts, drop-in activities and more. There’s no pressure to do everything, families are welcome to choose their favourite activities, or simply explore the garden at their own pace.

Our free Nature Explorer Activity Booklet will also be available throughout the week. It’s packed with facts, prompts and challenges to help children learn about the wildlife, trees and plants around them, and it’s a great way to keep the little ones engaged as they explore.

National Children’s Gardening Week is about helping children connect with the environment. They’ll learn where plants come from, why they matter, and how to care for them. But more than that, gardening gives children a real sense of achievement. Planting something small and watching it grow can be a powerful experience - and it’s fun, messy, and full of discovery along the way.

If you're curious to learn more about National Children’s Gardening Week as a national campaign, you can visit the official website here: National Children's Gardening Week

If you can't make it to One Garden Brighton, or you're inspired to keep things growing at home, there are still plenty of ways to get involved:

  • Grow a few herbs like mint or basil on a sunny windowsill, they’re quick, fragrant and easy for children to look after.

  • Use egg boxes or yogurt pots to start off seeds. Cress, sunflowers and beans are great for beginners.

  • Visit your local park or green space in Brighton and go on a plant or tree spotting walk.

  • Make a bug hotel using sticks, leaves, and empty toilet tubes to encourage wildlife into your outdoor spaces.

  • If you’re local to Stanmer Park, come and pick up a Nature Explorer booklet to guide your garden adventure.

We hope to see you at One Garden Brighton this half-term. Whether it’s for a quick visit or a full day of nature-based fun, National Children’s Gardening Week is a lovely way to get the whole family outdoors, learning, and growing together.
